Which Country Consumes the Most Hops in the World?

Global hop consumption amounted to 118 thousand tonnes in 2015, lowering by -11.2% against the previous year level. Overall, the global hop consumption indicated a moderate decline from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume decreased at an average annual rate of -0.9%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014, when the output figure increased by +13% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global hop consumption attained its maximum volume of 142 thousand tonnes in 2008. From 2009 to 2015, the total hop consumption growth failed to regain its strength.

Global Hops Consumption

In 2015, the countries with the highest consumption were Ethiopia (39 thousand tonnes), Germany (38 thousand tonnes), the United States (35 thousand tonnes), together mixed up 79% of total consumption. They were followed by China with a 5% of global consumption share and Czech Republic with a 5% share.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of hop consumption among the main consuming countries was attained by the United States (+3.1% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The highest levels of hop per capita consumption was registered in Czech Republic (0.68 kg/year), followed by Germany (0.47 kg/year), Ethiopia (0.39 kg/year), the United States (0.11 kg/year) and China (0.01 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of hop was estimated at 0.12 kg/year in 2015.

In Czech Republic, per capita hop consumption has grown noticably (+2.8% per year) in recent years. In 2015, Czech Republic per capita consumption reached 0.68 kg/year as compared with 0.55 kg/year in 2007.
