Which Country Eats the Most Eggplant in the World?

Global eggplant consumption amounted to 51,524 thousand tonnes in 2015, coming up by +2.4% against the previous year level. Overall, the global eggplant consumption indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.1%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2009, when the output figure increased by +9% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global eggplant consumption reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Global Eggplant Consumption

With nearly 30,354 thousand tonnes, China became the world’s leading eggplant consuming country, making up 59% of global consumption. The other major consumers were India (14,136 thousand tonnes) and Egypt (1,295 thousand tonnes), with a share of 27% and 3%, respectively. Moreover, eggplant consumption in China surpassed the figures recorded by India twofold. They were followed by Turkey with a 2% of global consumption share and Iran with a 2% share.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of eggplant consumption in China stood at +4.1%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: India (+5.2% per year) and Egypt (+1.4% per year).

Per capita eggplant (aubergine) in China was estimated at 21.57 kg/year, much higher than the global average of 1.40 kg/year. China was the leading country in terms of per capita consumption, among the main consumers of eggplant (aubergine), followed by Egypt (14.15 kg/year), India (10.78 kg/year), Turkey (10.49 kg/year) and Iran (10.36 kg/year).

In India, per capita eggplant (aubergine) consumption has grown noticably (+3.8% per year) in recent years. In 2015, India per capita consumption reached 21.57 kg/year as compared with 8.01 kg/year in 2007.
