Which Country Consumes the Most Currants And Gooseberries in the World?

Global currant and gooseberry consumption amounted to 674 thousand tonnes in 2015, moving up by +2.2% against the previous year level. Overall, the global currant and gooseberry consumption indicated a moderate decline from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, was relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume decreased at an average annual rate of -0.7%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013, when the output figure increased by +7% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global currant and gooseberry consumption attained its maximum volume of 715 thousand tonnes in 2007. From 2008 to 2015, the total currant and gooseberry consumption growth failed to regain its strength.

Global Currants And Gooseberries Consumption

With nearly 390 thousand tonnes, Russia became the world’s leading currant and gooseberry consuming country, comprising 58% of global consumption. The other major consumers were Poland (153 thousand tonnes) and Ukraine (27 thousand tonnes), with a share of 23% and 4%, respectively. Moreover, currant and gooseberry consumption in Russia surpassed the figures recorded by Poland threefold. They were followed by Austria with a 3% of global consumption share and France with a 3% share.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of currant and gooseberry consumption in Russia stood at -2.0%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Poland (+1.3% per year) and Ukraine (+1.3% per year).

The highest levels of currant and gooseberry per capita consumption was registered in Poland (3.97 kg/year), followed by Austria (2.72 kg/year), Russia (2.72 kg/year), Ukraine (0.61 kg/year) and France (0.32 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of currant and gooseberry was estimated at 0.40 kg/year in 2015.

In France, per capita currant and gooseberry consumption has grown noticably (+9.5% per year) in recent years. In 2015, France per capita consumption reached 3.97 kg/year as compared with 0.15 kg/year in 2007.
