Which Country Consumes the Most Chick Peas in the World?

Global chick peas consumption amounted to 14,094 thousand tonnes in 2015, ascending by +6.8% against the previous year level. Overall, the global chick peas consumption indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.7%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013, when the output figure increased by +24% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global chick peas consumption reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Global Chick Peas Consumption

With nearly 11,485 thousand tonnes, India became the world’s leading chick peas consuming country, comprising 76% of global consumption. The other major consumers were Pakistan (647 thousand tonnes) and Myanmar (593 thousand tonnes), with a share of 4% and 4%, respectively. Moreover, chick peas consumption in India surpassed the figures recorded by Pakistan more than tenfold. They were followed by Turkey with a 3% of global consumption share and Ethiopia with a 3% share.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of chick peas consumption in India stood at +7.7%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Pakistan (-3.2% per year) and Myanmar (+7.6% per year).

The highest levels of chick peas per capita consumption was registered in Myanmar (10.99 kg/year), followed by India (8.76 kg/year), Turkey (5.57 kg/year), Ethiopia (4.33 kg/year) and Pakistan (3.43 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of chick peas was estimated at 0.51 kg/year in 2015.

In Myanmar, per capita chick peas consumption has grown noticably (+6.8% per year) in recent years. In 2015, Myanmar per capita consumption reached 10.99 kg/year as compared with 6.50 kg/year in 2007.
