Which Country Consumes the Most Cassava in the World?

Global cassava consumption amounted to 279,539 thousand tonnes in 2015, increasing by +3.2% against the previous year level. Overall, the global cassava consumption indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011, when the output figure increased by +5% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global cassava consumption reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Global Cassava Consumption

With nearly 54,944 thousand tonnes, Nigeria became the world’s leading cassava consuming country, accounting for 20% of global consumption. The other major consumers were Thailand (24,611 thousand tonnes) and Indonesia (23,107 thousand tonnes), with a share of 9% and 8%, respectively. Moreover, cassava consumption in Nigeria surpassed the figures recorded by Thailand twofold. They were followed by Brazil with a 8% of global consumption share and Ghana with a 6% share.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of cassava consumption in Nigeria stood at +3.0%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Thailand (+1.2% per year) and Indonesia (+2.0% per year).

The highest levels of cassava per capita consumption was registered in Ghana (644.43 kg/year), followed by Thailand (362.14 kg/year), Nigeria (301.56 kg/year), Brazil (109.71 kg/year) and Indonesia (89.72 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of cassava was estimated at 45.54 kg/year in 2015.

In Ghana, per capita cassava consumption has grown noticably (+4.5% per year) in recent years. In 2015, Ghana per capita consumption reached 644.43 kg/year as compared with 453.56 kg/year in 2007.
