Which Country Consumes the Most Beeswax in the World?

Global beeswax consumption amounted to 66 thousand tonnes in 2015, remaining stable against the previous year level. Overall, the global beeswax consumption indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008, when the output figure increased by +5% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global beeswax consumption reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Global Beeswax Consumption

With nearly 22 thousand tonnes, India became the world’s leading beeswax consuming country, comprising 33% of global consumption. The other major consumers were Ethiopia (5 thousand tonnes) and Argentina (5 thousand tonnes), with a share of 8% and 8%, respectively. Moreover, beeswax consumption in India surpassed the figures recorded by Ethiopia fourfold. They were followed by the Republic of Korea with a 6% of global consumption share and Turkey with a 6% share.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of beeswax consumption in India stood at +1.7%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Ethiopia (+1.9% per year) and Argentina (+1.0% per year).

The highest levels of beeswax per capita consumption was registered in Argentina (0.12 kg/year), followed by the Republic of Korea (0.09 kg/year), Ethiopia (0.05 kg/year), Turkey (0.05 kg/year) and India (0.02 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of beeswax was estimated at 0.03 kg/year in 2015.

In the Republic of Korea, per capita beeswax consumption has grown modestly (+1.2% per year) in recent years. In 2015, the Republic of Korea per capita consumption reached 0.12 kg/year as compared with 0.08 kg/year in 2007.
