Which Country Eats the Most Spinach in the World?

Global spinach consumption amounted to 25,077 thousand tonnes in 2015, going up by +3.4% against the previous year level. Overall, the global spinach consumption indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.6%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008, when the output figure increased by +16% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global spinach consumption reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Global Spinach Consumption

With nearly 23,104 thousand tonnes, China became the world’s leading spinach consuming country, making up 91% of global consumption. The other major consumers were the United States (371 thousand tonnes) and Japan (251 thousand tonnes), with a share of 1% and 1%, respectively.They were followed by Turkey with a 1% of global consumption share and Belgium with a 1% share.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of spinach consumption in China stood at +6.5%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: the United States (+1.9% per year) and Japan (-2.1% per year).

Per capita spinach in China was estimated at 16.42 kg/year, much higher than the global average of 0.51 kg/year. China was the leading country in terms of per capita consumption, among the main consumers of spinach, followed by Belgium (12.13 kg/year), Turkey (2.56 kg/year), Japan (1.98 kg/year) and the United States (1.15 kg/year).

In China, per capita spinach consumption has grown noticably (+5.9% per year) in recent years. In 2015, China per capita consumption reached 16.42 kg/year as compared with 10.37 kg/year in 2007.
