Which Country Consumes the Most Pyrethrum in the World?

Global pyrethrum consumption amounted to 9 thousand tonnes in 2015, coming up by +1.6% against the previous year level. Overall, the global pyrethrum consumption indicated a pronounced decline from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume decreased at an average annual rate of -4.1%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011, when the output figure increased by +36% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global pyrethrum consumption attained its maximum volume of 14 thousand tonnes in 2008. From 2009 to 2015, the total pyrethrum consumption growth failed to regain its strength.

Global Pyrethrum Consumption

With nearly 7 thousand tonnes, Tanzania became the world’s leading pyrethrum consuming country, accounting for 71% of global consumption. The other major consumers were Papua New Guinea (1 thousand tonnes) and Kenya (0 thousand tonnes), with a share of 15% and 4%, respectively. Moreover, pyrethrum consumption in Tanzania surpassed the figures recorded by Papua New Guinea fivefold. They were followed by Rwanda with a 3% of global consumption share and Italy with a 3% share.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of pyrethrum consumption in Tanzania stood at +14.9%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Papua New Guinea (+2.5% per year) and Kenya (-32.9% per year).

The highest levels of pyrethrum per capita consumption was registered in Papua New Guinea (0.18 kg/year), followed by Tanzania (0.12 kg/year), Rwanda (0.03 kg/year), Kenya (0.01 kg/year) and Italy (0.01 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of pyrethrum was estimated at 0.01 kg/year in 2015.

In Tanzania, per capita pyrethrum consumption has grown noticably (+11.3% per year) in recent years. In 2015, Tanzania per capita consumption reached 0.18 kg/year as compared with 0.05 kg/year in 2007.
