Which Country Consumes the Most Poppy Seeds in the World?

Global poppy seed consumption amounted to 63 thousand tonnes in 2015, falling by -27.4% against the previous year level. Overall, the global poppy seed consumption indicated a moderate growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +0.6%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008, when the output figure increased by +49% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global poppy seed consumption attained its maximum volume of 100 thousand tonnes in 2011. From 2012 to 2015, the total poppy seed consumption growth failed to regain its strength.

Global Poppy Seeds Consumption

With nearly 29 thousand tonnes, Czech Republic became the world’s leading poppy seed consuming country, accounting for 30% of global consumption. The other major consumers were India (12 thousand tonnes) and Germany (11 thousand tonnes), with a share of 13% and 11%, respectively. Moreover, poppy seed consumption in Czech Republic surpassed the figures recorded by India twofold. They were followed by Turkey with a 11% of global consumption share and Hungary with a 9% share.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of poppy seed consumption in Czech Republic stood at -1.6%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: India (+6.5% per year) and Germany (-0.7% per year).

Per capita poppy seed in Czech Republic was estimated at 2.75 kg/year, much higher than the global average of 0.04 kg/year. Czech Republic was the leading country in terms of per capita consumption, among the main consumers of poppy seed, followed by Hungary (0.91 kg/year), Turkey (0.13 kg/year), Germany (0.13 kg/year) and India (0.01 kg/year).

In Turkey, per capita poppy seed consumption has grown noticably (+31.9% per year) in recent years. In 2015, Turkey per capita consumption reached 2.75 kg/year as compared with -0.09 kg/year in 2007.
