Which Country Consumes the Most Pears in the World?

Global pear consumption amounted to 26,481 thousand tonnes in 2015, moving up by +2.6% against the previous year level. Overall, the global pear consumption indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2009, when the output figure increased by +6% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global pear consumption reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Global Pears Consumption

With nearly 18,461 thousand tonnes, China became the world’s leading pear consuming country, accounting for 69% of global consumption. The other major consumers were Italy (753 thousand tonnes) and the United States (752 thousand tonnes), with a share of 3% and 3%, respectively. Moreover, pear consumption in China surpassed the figures recorded by Italy more than tenfold. They were followed by Argentina with a 3% of global consumption share and Turkey with a 2% share.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of pear consumption in China stood at +4.4%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Italy (-1.3% per year) and the United States (-0.8% per year).

The highest levels of pear per capita consumption was registered in Argentina (16.31 kg/year), followed by China (13.12 kg/year), Italy (12.59 kg/year), Turkey (6.07 kg/year) and the United States (2.34 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of pear was estimated at 3.75 kg/year in 2015.

In China, per capita pear consumption has grown noticably (+3.9% per year) in recent years. In 2015, China per capita consumption reached 16.31 kg/year as compared with 9.66 kg/year in 2007.
