Which Country Consumes the Most Mandarins and Clementines in the World?

Global mandarin and clementine consumption amounted to 31,147 thousand tonnes in 2015, growing by +6.4% against the previous year level. Overall, the global mandarin and clementine consumption indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.6%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011, when the output figure increased by +15% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global mandarin and clementine consumption reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Global Mandarins and Clementines Consumption

With nearly 16,674 thousand tonnes, China became the world’s leading mandarin and clementine consuming country, making up 52% of global consumption. The other major consumers were Spain (1,122 thousand tonnes) and Egypt (975 thousand tonnes), with a share of 4% and 3%, respectively. Moreover, mandarin and clementine consumption in China surpassed the figures recorded by Spain more than tenfold. They were followed by Brazil with a 3% of global consumption share and Japan with a 3% share.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of mandarin and clementine consumption in China stood at +10.6%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Spain (+18.8% per year) and Egypt (+3.3% per year).

The highest levels of tangerine, mandarin, clementine, satsumas per capita consumption was registered in Spain (24.32 kg/year), followed by China (11.85 kg/year), Egypt (10.65 kg/year), Japan (7.19 kg/year) and Brazil (4.66 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of tangerine, mandarin, clementine, satsumas was estimated at 2.67 kg/year in 2015.

In Spain, per capita tangerine, mandarin, clementine, satsumas consumption has grown noticably (+18.5% per year) in recent years. In 2015, Spain per capita consumption reached 24.32 kg/year as compared with 6.26 kg/year in 2007.
