Which Country Eats the Most Honey in the World?

Global honey consumption amounted to 1,662 thousand tonnes in 2015, rising by +9.8% against the previous year level. Overall, the global honey consumption indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, remained consistant, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015, when the output figure increased by +10% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global honey consumption attained its maximum volume of 1,678 thousand tonnes in 2013. From 2014 to 2015, the total honey consumption growth failed to regain its strength.

Global Honey Consumption

With nearly 339 thousand tonnes, China became the world’s leading honey consuming country, mixed up 20% of global consumption. The other major consumers were the United States (169 thousand tonnes) and Turkey (103 thousand tonnes), with a share of 10% and 6%, respectively. Moreover, honey consumption in China surpassed the figures recorded by the United States twofold. They were followed by the United States with a 5% of global consumption share and Germany with a 5% share.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of honey consumption in China stood at +1.8%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: the United States (+6.6% per year) and Turkey (+4.3% per year).

The highest levels of honey per capita consumption was registered in Turkey (1.31 kg/year), followed by Germany (1.04 kg/year), the United States (0.53 kg/year), the United States (0.27 kg/year) and China (0.24 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of honey was estimated at 0.33 kg/year in 2015.

In the United States, per capita honey consumption has grown noticably (+5.7% per year) in recent years. In 2015, the United States per capita consumption reached 1.31 kg/year as compared with 0.34 kg/year in 2007.
