Which Country Eats the Most Hazelnuts in the World?

Global hazelnut consumption amounted to 804 thousand tonnes in 2015, picking up by +12.7% against the previous year level. Overall, the global hazelnut consumption indicated a moderate decline from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume decreased at an average annual rate of -0.1%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008, when the output figure increased by +32% from the previous year level. In that year, the global hazelnut consumption attained its maximum volume of 1,071 thousand tonnes. From 2009 to 2015, the total hazelnut consumption growth failed to regain its strength.

Global Hazelnuts Consumption

With nearly 343 thousand tonnes, Turkey became the world’s leading hazelnut consuming country, accounting for 54% of global consumption. The other major consumers were Italy (81 thousand tonnes) and Georgia (47 thousand tonnes), with a share of 13% and 7%, respectively. Moreover, hazelnut consumption in Turkey surpassed the figures recorded by Italy fourfold. They were followed by the United States with a 5% of global consumption share and Azerbaijan with a 5% share.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of hazelnut consumption in Turkey stood at -5.3%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Italy (-5.5% per year) and Georgia (+10.4% per year).

The highest levels of hazelnut per capita consumption was registered in Georgia (11.66 kg/year), followed by Turkey (4.36 kg/year), Azerbaijan (3.11 kg/year), Italy (1.36 kg/year) and the United States (0.10 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of hazelnut was estimated at 0.73 kg/year in 2015.

In Georgia, per capita hazelnut consumption has grown noticably (+11.6% per year) in recent years. In 2015, Georgia per capita consumption reached 11.66 kg/year as compared with 4.83 kg/year in 2007.
