Which Country Consumes the Most Green Peas in the World?

Global green peas consumption amounted to 17,879 thousand tonnes in 2015, jumping by +2.1% against the previous year level. Overall, the global green peas consumption indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2009, when the output figure increased by +7% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global green peas consumption reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Global Green Peas Consumption

With nearly 10,804 thousand tonnes, China became the world’s leading green peas consuming country, accounting for 61% of global consumption. The other major consumers were India (3,992 thousand tonnes) and the United States (300 thousand tonnes), with a share of 23% and 2%, respectively. Moreover, green peas consumption in China surpassed the figures recorded by India threefold. They were followed by Belgium with a 1% of global consumption share and the United Kingdom with a 1% share.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of green peas consumption in China stood at +2.5%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: India (+6.6% per year) and the United States (-13.8% per year).

The highest levels of peas (green) per capita consumption was registered in Belgium (17.32 kg/year), followed by China (7.68 kg/year), India (3.05 kg/year), the United Kingdom (2.94 kg/year) and the United States (0.93 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of peas (green) was estimated at 0.65 kg/year in 2015.

In Belgium, per capita peas (green) consumption has grown noticably (+7.5% per year) in recent years. In 2015, Belgium per capita consumption reached 17.32 kg/year as compared with 9.73 kg/year in 2007.
