Which Country Eats the Most Grapefruits in the World?

Global grapefruit consumption amounted to 8,721 thousand tonnes in 2015, moving up by +4.4% against the previous year level. Overall, the global grapefruit consumption indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008, when the output figure increased by +5% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global grapefruit consumption reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Global Grapefruits Consumption

With nearly 3,819 thousand tonnes, China became the world’s leading grapefruit consuming country, making up 44% of global consumption. The other major consumers were the United States (828 thousand tonnes) and Viet Nam (476 thousand tonnes), with a share of 10% and 5%, respectively. Moreover, grapefruit consumption in China surpassed the figures recorded by the United States fivefold. They were followed by Mexico with a 5% of global consumption share and South Africa with a 4% share.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of grapefruit consumption in China stood at +6.7%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: the United States (-7.0% per year) and Viet Nam (+4.3% per year).

The highest levels of grapefruit (inc. pomelo) per capita consumption was registered in South Africa (6.32 kg/year), followed by Viet Nam (5.09 kg/year), Mexico (3.26 kg/year), China (2.71 kg/year) and the United States (2.57 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of grapefruit (inc. pomelo) was estimated at 3.05 kg/year in 2015.

In South Africa, per capita grapefruit (inc. pomelo) consumption has grown noticably (+10.7% per year) in recent years. In 2015, South Africa per capita consumption reached 6.32 kg/year as compared with 2.80 kg/year in 2007.
