Which Country Consumes the Most Flax Fiber in the World?

Global flax fiber consumption amounted to 246 thousand tonnes in 2015, coming down by -11.1% against the previous year level. Overall, the global flax fiber consumption indicated a pronounced decline from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, was roller-coasting throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume decreased at an average annual rate of -9.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2012, when the output figure increased by +11% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global flax fiber consumption attained its maximum volume of 522 thousand tonnes in 2007. From 2008 to 2015, the total flax fiber consumption growth failed to regain its strength.

Global Flax Fiber Consumption

With nearly 165 thousand tonnes, China became the world’s leading flax fiber consuming country, making up 53% of global consumption. The other major consumers were Russia (34 thousand tonnes) and Belgium (22 thousand tonnes), with a share of 11% and 7%, respectively. Moreover, flax fiber consumption in China surpassed the figures recorded by Russia fivefold. They were followed by the United Kingdom with a 5% of global consumption share and the Netherlands with a 4% share.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of flax fiber consumption in China stood at -10.1%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Russia (-4.6% per year) and Belgium (-218.9% per year).

The highest levels of flax fiber per capita consumption was registered in Belgium (1.94 kg/year), followed by the Netherlands (0.66 kg/year), the United Kingdom (0.25 kg/year), Russia (0.24 kg/year) and China (0.12 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of flax fiber was estimated at 0.04 kg/year in 2015.

In the United Kingdom, per capita flax fiber consumption has grown with a negative paces of growth (-1.6% per year) in recent years. In 2015, the United Kingdom per capita consumption reached 1.94 kg/year as compared with 0.29 kg/year in 2007.
