Which Country Consumes the Most Cranberries in the World?

Global cranberry consumption amounted to 721 thousand tonnes in 2015, moving up by +10.5% against the previous year level. Overall, the global cranberry consumption indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2012, when the output figure increased by +21% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global cranberry consumption reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Global Cranberries Consumption

With nearly 375 thousand tonnes, the United States became the world’s leading cranberry consuming country, comprising 57% of global consumption. The other major consumers were Canada (186 thousand tonnes) and Chile (85 thousand tonnes), with a share of 28% and 13%, respectively. Moreover, cranberry consumption in the United States surpassed the figures recorded by Canada twofold. They were followed by Belarus with a 1% of global consumption share and Azerbaijan with a 0% share.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of cranberry consumption in the United States stood at +3.0%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Canada (+13.7% per year) and Chile (+18.3% per year).

The highest levels of cranberry per capita consumption was registered in Canada (5.17 kg/year), followed by Chile (4.72 kg/year), the United States (1.17 kg/year), Belarus (0.70 kg/year) and Azerbaijan (0.30 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of cranberry was estimated at 0.84 kg/year in 2015.

In Chile, per capita cranberry consumption has grown noticably (+17.1% per year) in recent years. In 2015, Chile per capita consumption reached 5.17 kg/year as compared with 1.34 kg/year in 2007.
