Global coconut consumption amounted to 60,644 thousand tonnes in 2015, standing approx. at the previous year level. Overall, the global coconut consumption indicated a moderate decline from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, was relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume decreased at an average annual rate of -0.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2012, when the output figure increased by +6% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global coconut consumption attained its maximum volume of 62,143 thousand tonnes in 2013. From 2014 to 2015, the total coconut consumption growth failed to regain its strength.

Global Coconuts Consumption

In 2015, the countries with the highest consumption were Indonesia (17,567 thousand tonnes), the Philippines (14,138 thousand tonnes), India (11,708 thousand tonnes), together accounting for 72% of total consumption. They were followed by Brazil with a 5% of global consumption share and Sri Lanka with a 4% share.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of coconut consumption among the main consuming countries was attained by India (+0.9% per year), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the consumption figures.

The highest levels of coconut per capita consumption was registered in the Philippines (140.40 kg/year), followed by Sri Lanka (123.02 kg/year), Indonesia (68.20 kg/year), Brazil (13.96 kg/year) and India (8.93 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of coconut was estimated at 69.22 kg/year in 2015.

In Sri Lanka, per capita coconut consumption has grown modestly (+1.7% per year) in recent years. In 2015, Sri Lanka per capita consumption reached 140.40 kg/year as compared with 107.69 kg/year in 2007.
