Global carrot and turnip consumption amounted to 40,041 thousand tonnes in 2015, moving up by +3.3% against the previous year level. Overall, the global carrot and turnip consumption indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008, when the output figure increased by +11% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global carrot and turnip consumption reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Global Carrot And Turnip Consumption

With nearly 17,213 thousand tonnes, China became the world’s leading carrot and turnip consuming country, mixed up 43% of global consumption. The other major consumers were Uzbekistan (1,897 thousand tonnes) and Russia (1,875 thousand tonnes), with a share of 5% and 5%, respectively. Moreover, carrot and turnip consumption in China surpassed the figures recorded by Uzbekistan ninefold. They were followed by the United States with a 4% of global consumption share and Ukraine with a 2% share.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of carrot and turnip consumption in China stood at +5.0%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Uzbekistan (+11.1% per year) and Russia (+3.1% per year).

The highest levels of carrot and turnip per capita consumption was registered in Uzbekistan (63.45 kg/year), followed by Ukraine (19.83 kg/year), Russia (13.07 kg/year), China (12.23 kg/year) and the United States (4.60 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of carrot and turnip was estimated at 5.46 kg/year in 2015.

In Uzbekistan, per capita carrot and turnip consumption has grown noticably (+9.5% per year) in recent years. In 2015, Uzbekistan per capita consumption reached 63.45 kg/year as compared with 30.65 kg/year in 2007.
