Global cabbage consumption amounted to 72,346 thousand tonnes in 2015, approximately equating the previous year level. Overall, the global cabbage consumption indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, remained consistant, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011, when the output figure increased by +7% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global cabbage consumption reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Global Cabbage And Other Brassicas Consumption

With nearly 34,014 thousand tonnes, China became the world’s leading cabbage consuming country, accounting for 46% of global consumption. The other major consumers were India (9,293 thousand tonnes) and Russia (3,714 thousand tonnes), with a share of 13% and 5%, respectively. Moreover, cabbage consumption in China surpassed the figures recorded by India fourfold. They were followed by the Republic of Korea with a 4% of global consumption share and Ukraine with a 3% share.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of cabbage consumption in China stood at +1.5%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: India (+6.6% per year) and Russia (+3.5% per year).

The highest levels of cabbage and other brassicas per capita consumption was registered in the Republic of Korea (65.42 kg/year), followed by Ukraine (42.73 kg/year), Russia (25.89 kg/year), China (24.17 kg/year) and India (7.09 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of cabbage and other brassicas was estimated at 7.01 kg/year in 2015.

In Ukraine, per capita cabbage and other brassicas consumption has grown noticably (+5.3% per year) in recent years. In 2015, Ukraine per capita consumption reached 65.42 kg/year as compared with 28.31 kg/year in 2007.
