Price of Steel Hits Record High in US as Foundries See 18% Increase to $4,583 per Ton

U.S. Steel Foundry Import Price in February 2023

In February 2023, the steel foundry price amounted to $4,583 per ton (CIF, US), jumping by 18% against the previous month. Over the period from February 2022 to February 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.5%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in November 2022 an increase of 29% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in February 2023.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In February 2023, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($11,938 per ton), while the price for China ($2,981 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+8.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

U.S. Steel Foundry Imports

In February 2023, supplies from abroad of steel foundries (except investment) decreased by -1.8% to 4.7K tons, falling for the fourth consecutive month after four months of growth. In general, imports recorded a slight contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in July 2022 when imports increased by 18% m-o-m.

In value terms, steel foundry imports soared to $21M (IndexBox estimates) in February 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in July 2022 when imports increased by 22% m-o-m.

U.S. Steel Foundry Imports by Country

In February 2023, China (2.1K tons) constituted the largest steel foundry supplier to the United States, with a 44% share of total imports. Moreover, steel foundry imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (953 tons), twofold. Austria (253 tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5.4% share.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to -2.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: India (+0.6% per month) and Austria (+2.3% per month).

In value terms, China ($6.1M), India ($4M) and Canada ($1.7M) were the largest steel foundry suppliers to the United States, with a combined 55% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Austria, Sweden, Brazil, Argentina and South Korea, which together accounted for a further 25%.

Among the main suppliers, Sweden, with a CAGR of +14.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
