Sportswear Price in America Plummets to $4.1 per Unit After Two Consecutive Months of Contraction

U.S. Sportswear Import Price in December 2022

In December 2022, the sportswear price stood at $4.1 per unit (CIF, US), which is down by -14.9% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2022 an increase of 17% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $5.5 per unit in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to December 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In December 2022, the country with the highest price was Bangladesh ($7.2 per unit), while the price for China ($3.1 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to December 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bangladesh (+9.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

U.S. Sportswear Imports

In December 2022, approximately 26M units of track suits, ski suits and swimwear were imported into the United States; increasing by 48% compared with November 2022 figures. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in September 2022 when imports increased by 85% against the previous month. Imports peaked at 41M units in March 2022; however, from April 2022 to December 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sportswear imports skyrocketed to $106M (IndexBox estimates) in December 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a noticeable decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in September 2022 when imports increased by 86% month-to-month. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at 187M units in March 2022; however, from April 2022 to December 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

U.S. Sportswear Imports by Country

In December 2022, China (16M units) constituted the largest sportswear supplier to the United States, accounting for a 61% share of total imports. Moreover, sportswear imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Vietnam (6M units), threefold. Cambodia (1.2M units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 4.7% share.

From January 2022 to December 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to -2.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Vietnam (-1.7% per month) and Cambodia (-0.2% per month).

In value terms, the largest sportswear suppliers to the United States were China ($49M), Vietnam ($29M) and Indonesia ($5.9M), with a combined 79% share of total imports. Cambodia, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 12%.

Among the main suppliers, Bangladesh, with a CAGR of +1.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.

Moreover, the popularity of activewear and athleisure has driven up demand for premium sportswear brands. Additionally, many sportswear brands have high marketing budgets, which drives up the cost of their products.
