Non-decaffeinated Roasted Coffee Import in United States Increases Significantly to $154M in March 2023
U.S. Roasted Coffee Imports
In March 2023, approximately 8.1K tons of roasted coffee (not decaffeinated) were imported into the United States; increasing by 13% on the previous month's figure. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 when imports increased by 27% against the previous month.
In value terms, non-decaffeinated roasted coffee imports skyrocketed to $154M (IndexBox estimates) in March 2023. The total import value increased at an average monthly rate of +1.9% from March 2022 to March 2023; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period.

Imports by Country
In March 2023, Canada (3.7K tons) constituted the largest supplier of non-decaffeinated roasted coffee to the United States, accounting for a 46% share of total imports. Moreover, non-decaffeinated roasted coffee imports from Canada exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Switzerland (1.6K tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Italy (822 tons), with a 10% share.
From March 2022 to March 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume from Canada was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Switzerland (+5.5% per month) and Italy (-3.8% per month).
In value terms, the largest non-decaffeinated roasted coffee suppliers to the United States were Switzerland ($83M), Canada ($45M) and Italy ($9.2M), together accounting for 89% of total imports. These countries were followed by Colombia, Germany, Mexico and the Dominican Republic, which together accounted for a further 7.4%.
the Dominican Republic, with a CAGR of +17.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In March 2023, the roasted coffee price amounted to $18,983 per ton (CIF, US), with an increase of 13% against the previous month. Over the period from March 2022 to March 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.2%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In March 2023, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($52,102 per ton), while the price for Mexico ($5,487 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From March 2022 to March 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+1.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
