U.S. Plastic Pipe Exports Reach $1.2B, Recovering from Last Year's Slump

From January-October 2021, the U.S. exported 76K tonnes of plastic pipes and fittings, 9% more than in the same period of the previous year. In monetary terms, exports reached $1.17B, rising by 30% against the comparable period of 2020. Last year, U.S. supplies abroad dropped by 10% y-o-y to 132K tonnes, owing primarily to a sharp reduction in deliveries to Canada and Mexico, the major importers of American plastic products. The average export price for plastic pipes and fittings from the U.S. increased by 2.3% y-o-y to $8,163 per tonne in 2020.
U.S. Plastic Pipe Exports
From January to October 2021, the U.S. exports of plastic pipes and fittings totalled 76K tonnes, growing by 9% against the same period a year earlier. In monetary terms, exports rose by 30% to $1.17B.
In 2020, the volume of plastic pipes and fittings exported from the U.S. contracted to 132K tonnes, waning by -10.1% against 2019. In value terms, exports reduced to $1.1B (IndexBox estimates).
Canada (72K tonnes) accounted for 54% of American supplies abroad. Moreover, exports of plastic pipes and fittings to Canada exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Mexico (29K tonnes), twofold.
Over the last year, the supplies to Canada reduced by -6.9% y-o-y. Exports to Mexico fell by '13.4% y-o-y, while shipments to the U.K. grew by +40.2% y-o-y.
In value terms, the largest markets for plastic pipe and fittings supplied from the U.S. were Canada ($329M), Mexico ($305M) and the U.K. ($33M), with a combined 62% share of total exports.
The average export price for plastic pipes and fittings stood at $8,163 per tonne in 2020, picking up by 2.3% against the previous year. There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. The country with the highest price was the U.K. ($16,496 per tonne), while the average price for exports to Canada ($4,559 per tonne) was amongst the lowest. In 2020, the most notable growth rate in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Canada, while the prices for the other significant destinations experienced a decline.
