U.S. Photographic Film Export Increases 3%, Averaging $122M in March 2023
U.S. Photographic Film Exports
In March 2023, overseas shipments of photographic film, paper, plate, and chemical increased by 7.2% to 4.9K tons, rising for the second month in a row after two months of decline. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in June 2022 when exports increased by 35% m-o-m. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 7.1K tons. From July 2022 to March 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, photographic film exports rose to $122M (IndexBox estimates) in March 2023. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a slight descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in October 2022 with an increase of 8.1% against the previous month.

Exports by Country
China (1.4K tons) was the main destination for photographic film exports from the United States, accounting for a 29% share of total exports. Moreover, photographic film exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Mexico (675 tons), twofold. Brazil (414 tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 8.4% share.
From March 2022 to March 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume to China stood at +3.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Mexico (+0.6% per month) and Brazil (+1.9% per month).
In value terms, China ($46M) remains the key foreign market for photographic film exports from the United States, comprising 38% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mexico ($12M), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 6.6% share.
From March 2022 to March 2023, the average monthly growth rate of value to China was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Mexico (+1.9% per month) and Germany (-0.8% per month).
Export Prices by Country
In March 2023, the photographic film price stood at $24,780 per ton (FOB, US), shrinking by -3.6% against the previous month. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 an increase of 25% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $27,840 per ton in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to March 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In March 2023, the country with the highest price was China ($32,584 per ton), while the average price for exports to Spain ($5,245 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From March 2022 to March 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+12.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
