Pet Food Market Report: Trends, Consumer Behaviour, Brands, and Prices 2022

The pet food market is a large and growing industry. In the United States alone, it is estimated that Americans spend over $23 billion (in wholesale prices, IndexBox data) on pet food each year. This figure is expected to grow as more and more people adopt pets.

There are a number of factors driving the growth of the pet food market. One is the increasing humanization of pets. As pets become more like family members, pet owners are increasingly willing to spend money on high-quality, nutritious food for their furry companions.

Another factor driving the growth of the pet food market is the increasing health consciousness of consumers. Pet owners are now more likely to seek out foods that will promote their pet's health and wellbeing. This trend has led to an increase in the demand for organic and natural pet foods.

Finally, the rising cost of living is also driving the growth of the pet food market. As households struggle to make ends meet, many are turning to pets as a cheaper alternative to children. Pets require less expensive food and medical care than children, making them a more affordable option for families on a tight budget.

Pricing in the Pet Food Market 2022

In recent years, the pet food market has seen a marked increase in the price of pet food. This is largely due to the increased cost of raw materials, as well as the increased demand from pet owners for premium and natural foods.

As a result of these trends, many pet food manufacturers have had to raise prices in order to keep up with costs. This has led to some pet owners switching to cheaper brands, or even making their own pet food at home.

However, there are still a large number of pet owners who are willing to pay more for premium and natural pet foods. For these consumers, price is not as much of a concern as ensuring that their pets are getting the best possible nutrition.

In March 2022, the U.S. dog and cat food export price stood at $2,436 per tonne, stabilizing at the previous month. Over 1Q 2022, the most prominent rate of price growth was recorded in Feb 2022 -- an increase of 4% m-o-m. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $2,439 per tonne; afterwards, it flattened through to Mar 2022.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of U.S. pet food exports: the country with the highest price was China ($3,938 per tonne), while the average price for exports to the Philippines ($1,312 per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

The Future of the Pet Food Market

The pet food industry is constantly evolving to meet the needs of pet owners. The future of the pet food market looks bright, with new products and innovations that will make it easier than ever to keep our furry friends healthy and happy. Here are some of the trends that we can expect to see in the coming years:

1. Health and wellness: Pet owners are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of good nutrition for their pets. They are looking for foods that are formulated to meet their specific needs, whether that's for a particular health condition or just to maintain overall health and vitality.

2. Natural and organic: Consumers are also becoming more conscious of the ingredients in their pet's food and are opting for products made with natural and organic ingredients.

3. Convenience: In our busy lives, we want products that are easy to use and fit into our busy schedules. Look for pet food manufacturers to offer more convenient packaging options and easy-to-use online ordering systems.

4. Customization: Just as we like our coffee made just the way we like it, we now expect our pet's food to be tailored to their individual preferences and nutritional needs. Manufacturersare responding by offering more customizable options, such as mix-and-match kibble and wet food formulas.

5. Technology: The pet food industry is using technology to create products that are more effective and efficient. For example, some companies are using 3D printing to create customized pet food formulas.

6. Sustainability: As we become more aware of the impact our choices have on the environment, we are looking for products that are sustainable and eco-friendly. Pet food companies are responding with initiatives such as using recycled materials in packaging and sourcing ingredients from sustainable farms.

7. Premiumization: We are willing to spend more on products that offer superior quality and added benefits. This trend is especially strong in the pet food industry, where premium products are often seen as a better value for the money.

8. Globalization: The pet food market is becoming more global, with manufacturers looking to expand into new markets around the world. This trend is being driven by the growing demand for pet ownership in developing countries and the increasing spending power of pet owners in developed countries.

9. E-commerce: The convenience of online shopping is a major factor driving the growth of the pet food market. Consumers can now buy pet food from the comfort of their own homes, and manufacturers are taking advantage of this by offering more products through their websites and online retailers.
