U.S. Office Furniture Costs Increase 9%, Average Cost at $13.7 per kg

U.S. Office Furniture Import Price in February 2023

In February 2023, the office furniture price amounted to $13,745 per ton (CIF, US), growing by 9.2% against the previous month. Over the last twelve-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.0%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in August 2022 when the average import price increased by 17% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in February 2023.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In February 2023, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($18,901 per ton), while the price for the UK ($9,027 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+4.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

U.S. Office Furniture Imports

In February 2023, approximately 4.3K tons of office furniture (except wood) were imported into the United States; shrinking by -17.8% on the previous month's figure. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a slight downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2022 when imports increased by 25% month-to-month.

In value terms, office furniture imports fell to $59M (IndexBox estimates) in February 2023. Overall, imports saw a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 with an increase of 22% m-o-m.

U.S. Office Furniture Imports by Country

In February 2023, Canada (2.6K tons) constituted the largest supplier of office furniture to the United States, with a 60% share of total imports. Moreover, office furniture imports from Canada exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (594 tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Mexico (298 tons), with a 6.9% share.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from Canada was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: China (-5.3% per month) and Mexico (-3.0% per month).

In value terms, Canada ($33M) constituted the largest supplier of office furniture to the United States, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($7M), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Mexico, with an 8.6% share.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from Canada was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: China (-4.5% per month) and Mexico (-1.7% per month).
