US Octyl Alcohol Exports Bottom Out at $8.5M in February 2023
U.S. Octyl Alcohol Exports
In February 2023, approximately 5.4K tons of octanol (octyl alcohol) and isomers thereof were exported from the United States; declining by -54.4% against January 2023. Overall, exports showed a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in August 2022 when exports increased by 132% month-to-month. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 17K tons. From September 2022 to February 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, octyl alcohol exports plummeted to $8.5M (IndexBox estimates) in February 2023. In general, exports continue to indicate a noticeable setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in August 2022 when exports increased by 87% against the previous month.

Exports by Country
Canada (1.7K tons), Colombia (1.3K tons) and Mexico (1.2K tons) were the main destinations of octyl alcohol exports from the United States, together comprising 76% of total exports. These countries were followed by Chile and Argentina, which together accounted for a further 22%.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Chile (with a CAGR of +39.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Canada ($3.2M), Chile ($1.7M) and Mexico ($1.6M) appeared to be the largest markets for octyl alcohol exported from the United States worldwide, together comprising 77% of total exports.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Chile, with a CAGR of +42.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In February 2023, the octyl alcohol price stood at $1,574 per ton (FOB, US), jumping by 31% against the previous month. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The export price peaked at $1,874 per ton in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to February 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Canada ($1,908 per ton), while the average price for exports to Colombia ($1,220 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Chile (+2.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
