U.S. Motor And Generator Imports
In February 2023, imports of motors and generators into the United States dropped markedly to 66M units, which is down by -16.1% compared with January 2023. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 when imports increased by 20% against the previous month. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at 93M units in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to February 2023, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, motor and generator imports contracted to $1.4B (IndexBox estimates) in February 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2022 with an increase of 14% against the previous month. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at 1.6B units in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to February 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country
Mexico (17M units), China (14M units) and Vietnam (6.4M units) were the main suppliers of motor and generator imports to the United States, with a combined 57% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Japan, Switzerland, Canada, India, Taiwan (Chinese), Germany, South Korea, Thailand, Brazil and Slovenia, which together accounted for a further 34%.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Germany (with a CAGR of +7.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Mexico ($421M) constituted the largest supplier of motor and generator to the United States, comprising 30% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($184M), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Japan, with an 11% share.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly growth rate of value from Mexico was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: China (-3.5% per month) and Japan (+0.3% per month).
Import Prices by Country
In February 2023, the motor and generator price amounted to $21.0 per unit (CIF, US), picking up by 10% against the previous month. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in September 2022 when the average import price increased by 16% against the previous month. The import price peaked in February 2023.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In February 2023, the country with the highest price was Germany ($55.1 per unit), while the price for Slovenia ($4.4 per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+8.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
