U.S. Hose and Belt Import Falls 5%, Averaging 52K Tons in November 2022
U.S. Hose and Belt Imports
In November 2022, approximately 52K tons of rubber and plastic hoses and belting were imported into the United States; waning by -5.1% compared with the previous month. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when imports increased by 15% month-to-month. Imports peaked at 64K tons in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to November 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, hose and belt imports fell to $417M (IndexBox estimates) in November 2022. The total import value increased at an average monthly rate of +1.9% over the period from January 2022 to November 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 when imports increased by 17% against the previous month. Imports peaked at 468K tons in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to November 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Mexico (12K tons), China (12K tons) and Canada (5.8K tons) were the main suppliers of hose and belt imports to the United States, with a combined 58% share of total imports. These countries were followed by India, Taiwan (Chinese), South Korea, Turkey, Italy, Japan, Thailand, Germany, Spain and Vietnam, which together accounted for a further 33%.
From January 2022 to November 2022, the biggest increases were in South Korea (with a CAGR of +5.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest hose and belt suppliers to the United States were Mexico ($105M), China ($57M) and Canada ($39M), with a combined 48% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Japan, India, Germany, Italy, South Korea, Taiwan (Chinese), Thailand, Turkey, Spain and Vietnam, which together accounted for a further 34%.
Spain, with a CAGR of +6.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In November 2022, the hose and belt price stood at $7,958 per ton (CIF, US), approximately mirroring the previous month. Over the last ten-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.3%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in September 2022 when the average import price increased by 5.2% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in November 2022.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In November 2022, the country with the highest price was Japan ($18.3 per kg), while the price for Vietnam ($4,510 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to November 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+6.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
