For the fourth consecutive year, the U.S. recorded growth in overseas purchases of potato chips, which increased by 54% to 88K tons in 2020. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2010 to 2020: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.0% per year. In value terms, supplies amounted to $227M (IndexBox estimates) in 2020.
Canada (34K tons), Mexico (23K tons) and China (4.6K tons) were the main suppliers of potato chips imports to the U.S., with a combined 69% share of total volume.
In value terms, Canada ($119M), Mexico ($89M) and China ($3.8M) constituted the largest potato chips suppliers to the U.S., with a combined 93% share of total imports.
China recorded the highest growth rate concerning the value of imports among the leading suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
The average potato chips import price stood at $2,591 per ton in 2020, reducing by -27.9% against the previous year. Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin; the country with the highest price was Mexico ($3,942 per ton), while the price for China ($837 per ton) was amongst the lowest. From 2010 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Canada, while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
