U.S. Turkey Meat Price Reaches its Maximum at $3,177 per Ton in July

U.S. Turkey Meat Export Price per Ton July 2022

In July 2022, the turkey meat price per ton amounted to $3,177, rising by 2.8% against the previous month. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in June 2022 when the average export price increased by 8.1% month-to-month. The export price peaked in July 2022.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In July 2022, the country with the highest price was Panama ($5,084 per ton), while the average price for exports to Angola ($1,146 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to July 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Angola (+13.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

U.S. Turkey Meat Export Prices by Type

Average prices varied noticeably for the major types of exported product. In July 2022, the products with the highest prices were frozen cuts of turkey ($3,426 per ton) and fresh or chilled whole turkeys ($3,334 per ton), while the average price for exports of frozen whole turkeys ($2,985 per ton) and fresh or chilled cuts of turkey ($3,018 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to July 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: frozen whole turkey (+10.0%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

U.S. Turkey Meat Exports

In July 2022, the amount of turkey meat exported from the United States reached 12K tons, growing by 14% against the previous month. Overall, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in May 2022 when exports increased by 38% against the previous month. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 13K tons. From June 2022 to July 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, turkey meat exports skyrocketed to $38M (IndexBox estimates) in July 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 with an increase of 32% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $39M in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to July 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

U.S. Turkey Meat Exports by Type

Fresh or chilled cuts of turkey (6.2K tons), frozen cuts of turkey (4K tons) and fresh or chilled whole turkeys (858 tons) were the main products of turkey meat exports from the United States, with a combined 94% share of total exports. Frozen whole turkeys lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 6.5%.

From January 2022 to July 2022, the biggest increases were in fresh or chilled whole turkey (with a CAGR of +77.8%), while shipments for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the most traded types of turkey meat in the United States were fresh or chilled cuts of turkey ($19M), frozen cuts of turkey ($14M) and fresh or chilled whole turkeys ($2.9M), with a combined 94% share of total exports. These products were followed by frozen whole turkeys, which accounted for a further 6.1%.

Fresh or chilled whole turkey, with a CAGR of +79.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main product categories over the period under review, while shipments for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

U.S. Turkey Meat Exports by Country

Mexico (7.9K tons) was the main destination for turkey meat exports from the United States, accounting for a 66% share of total exports. Moreover, turkey meat exports to Mexico exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Benin (587 tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by the Dominican Republic (333 tons), with a 2.8% share.

From January 2022 to July 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume to Mexico stood at -2.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Benin (+17.4% per month) and the Dominican Republic (+3.8% per month).

In value terms, Mexico ($27M) remains the key foreign market for turkey meat exports from the United States, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Dominican Republic ($1.6M), with a 4.2% share of total exports. It was followed by Benin, with a 2.8% share.

From January 2022 to July 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value to Mexico stood at -1.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: the Dominican Republic (+10.0% per month) and Benin (+14.6% per month).
