Toilet Paper Price in America Decline 11.5% to $1,790 per Ton After Peaking in May

U.S. Toilet Paper Import Price per Ton July 2022

In July 2022, the toilet paper price per ton amounted to $1,790 (CIF, US), picking up by 2.1% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in May 2022 when the average import price increased by 9.2% month-to-month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $2,024 per ton. From June 2022 to July 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2022, the country with the highest price was Canada ($2,317 per ton), while the price for Mexico ($1,106 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to July 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+1.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

U.S. Toilet Paper Imports

In July 2022, toilet paper imports into the United States contracted sharply to 14K tons, reducing by -15.9% against June 2022 figures. In general, imports continue to indicate a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when imports increased by 30% m-o-m. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at 17K tons in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to July 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, toilet paper imports declined to $24M (IndexBox estimates) in July 2022. Overall, imports saw a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2022 when imports increased by 33% m-o-m. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $33M in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to July 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

U.S. Toilet Paper Imports by Country

Canada (6.7K tons), Mexico (4.2K tons) and China (2K tons) were the main suppliers of toilet paper imports to the United States, together accounting for 94% of total imports. Trinidad and Tobago lagged somewhat behind, comprising a further 1.7%.

From January 2022 to July 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Trinidad and Tobago (with a CAGR of +14.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, Canada ($16M) constituted the largest supplier of toilet paper to the United States, comprising 64% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mexico ($4.6M), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with an 11% share.

From January 2022 to July 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value from Canada amounted to -5.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Mexico (-4.0% per month) and China (+3.7% per month).
