Sunflower Seed Price Fell to its Year’s Minimum of $1,191 per ton in July 2022
U.S. Sunflower Seed Import Price per Ton July 2022
In July 2022, the sunflower seed price per ton amounted to $1,191 (CIF, US), shrinking by -28.1% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in February 2022 an increase of 32% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $1,660 per ton in April 2022; however, from May 2022 to July 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Turkey ($1,920 per ton), while the price for Argentina ($602 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to July 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+5.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Sunflower Seed Imports
In July 2022, approximately 15K tons of sunflower seed were imported into the United States; rising by 81% against the previous month's figure. In general, imports enjoyed a resilient expansion. Imports peaked at 16K tons in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to July 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, sunflower seed imports surged to $17M (IndexBox estimates) in July 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a prominent expansion from January 2022 to July 2022: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +7.2% over the last six-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on July 2022 figures, imports decreased by -23.6% against May 2022 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in May 2022 when imports increased by 47% against the previous month. As a result, imports attained the peak of $23M. From June 2022 to July 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
U.S. Sunflower Seed Imports by Country
Argentina (6.6K tons), Bulgaria (5.5K tons) and Canada (1.3K tons) were the main suppliers of sunflower seed imports to the United States, with a combined 92% share of total imports.
From January 2022 to July 2022, the biggest increases were in Argentina (with a CAGR of +89.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Bulgaria ($9.5M) constituted the largest supplier of sunflower seed to the United States, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Argentina ($4M), with a 23% share of total imports. It was followed by Canada, with an 8.5% share.
From January 2022 to July 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value from Bulgaria totaled +5.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Argentina (+82.1% per month) and Canada (-11.9% per month).
