The spinach consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013, when it surged by 24% against the previous year. The level of spinach consumption peaked at $1B in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2017, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Spinach Production in the EU

In 2017, spinach production in the European Union stood at 597K tonnes, standing approx. at the previous year. The spinach production continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern, largely conditioned by stable figures in both harvested area and average yield.

The countries with the highest volumes of spinach production in 2017 were France (111K tonnes), Italy (92K tonnes) and Belgium (81K tonnes), together comprising 48% of total production. Spain, Greece, Germany and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 47%. From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of spinach production, amongst the main producing countries, was attained by Greece (+5.9% per year), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average spinach yield amounted to 16 tonne per ha in 2017, approximately equating the previous year. The spinach yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The spinach harvested area stood at 38K ha in 2017, standing approx. at the previous year.

Exports in the EU

In 2017, spinach exports in the European Union amounted to 101K tonnes, increasing by 8.7% against the previous year. The spinach exports continue to indicate a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2012, when the exports increased by 32% against the previous year. In value terms, spinach exports totaled $160M (IndexBox estimates) in 2017. 

Exports by Country

The Netherlands (33K tonnes) and Spain (29K tonnes) represented roughly 62% of total exports of spinach in 2017. Italy (19K tonnes) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by France (8.8K tonnes) and Germany (4.6K tonnes). All these countries together held near 32% share of total exports. Belgium (1.7K tonnes) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of exports, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Spain (+16.4% per year), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2017, the spinach export price in the European Union amounted to $1.6 per kg, going up by 5.1% against the previous year. The the spinach export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern.

Export prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest export price was Italy ($2.9 per kg), while France ($732 per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of export prices was attained by Italy (+5.2% per year), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the EU

In 2017, imports of spinach in the European Union amounted to 85K tonnes, rising by 6.3% against the previous year. The spinach imports continue to indicate a strong expansion. In value terms, spinach imports amounted to $162M (IndexBox estimates) in 2017. 

Imports by Country

The UK (20K tonnes), Germany (20K tonnes) and the Netherlands (14K tonnes) represented roughly 64% of total imports of spinach in 2017. France (7K tonnes) ranks second in terms of the global imports with a 8.2% share, followed by Belgium (6.4%). The following importers - Poland (3.2K tonnes), Sweden (1.8K tonnes), Ireland (1.8K tonnes) and Bulgaria (1.6K tonnes) together made up 9.8% of total imports.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of imports, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Poland (+39.9% per year), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The spinach import price in the European Union stood at $1.9 per kg in 2017, jumping by 8.6% against the previous year. The the spinach import price continues to indicate a temperate decrease.

Import prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest import price was Sweden ($2.8 per kg), while Bulgaria ($530 per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of import prices was attained by the Netherlands (+0.3% per year), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
