Spain's Vegetable Oils Price Hits New Record of $3,474 per Ton, Fluctuating Wildly over 2022

Spain Vegetable Oils Export Price in October 2022

In October 2022, the vegetable oils price stood at $3,474 per ton (FOB, Spain), with an increase of 13% against the previous month. Over the period from January 2022 to October 2022, it increased at an average monthly rate of +5.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2022 when the average export price increased by 29% against the previous month. The export price peaked in October 2022.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In October 2022, the country with the highest price was Japan ($11,350 per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($1,304 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to October 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+13.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Spain Vegetable Oils Exports

In October 2022, the amount of vegetable fats and oils exported from Spain rose notably to 3.7K tons, surging by 6.5% on the previous month's figure. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in July 2022 when exports increased by 34% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at 5.2K tons in March 2022; however, from April 2022 to October 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, vegetable oils exports skyrocketed to $13M (IndexBox estimates) in October 2022. In general, total exports indicated a tangible expansion from January 2022 to October 2022: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +4.5% over the last nine months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on October 2022 figures, exports decreased by -2.8% against August 2022 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in February 2022 when exports increased by 45% m-o-m. The exports peaked at 13K tons in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to October 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Spain Vegetable Oils Exports by Country

France (1.2K tons), Italy (893 tons) and Portugal (707 tons) were the main destinations of vegetable oils exports from Spain, together accounting for 74% of total exports. the Netherlands, Japan, Germany and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 20%.

From January 2022 to October 2022, the biggest increases were in Japan (with a CAGR of +21.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for vegetable oils exported from Spain were France ($3.7M), Italy ($2.4M) and Japan ($2.2M), with a combined 64% share of total exports.

Japan, with a CAGR of +29.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
