Factors Affecting Price Dynamics
Several factors have contributed to the sharp decline in prices, including oversupply, seasonal patterns, and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Oversupply has led to a downward trend in demand, resulting in a decrease in prices. The market is currently flooded with imports, primarily from Peru and Chile, which has fuelled competition and reduced prices. Spain's cranberry industry has also witnessed a similar drop in prices due to the same factors.
Furthermore, seasonality has played a crucial role in determining the fate of the market. In recent years, there has been a massive increase in the production of blueberries and cranberries, which results in more significant supplies in the peak season. As the supply exceeds the demand, the prices reduce.
The COVID-19 pandemic has also left its mark on Spain's blueberry and cranberry industry. Due to the pandemic, there was a fall in the demand for the products as they hit the hospitality sector. Additionally, due to quarantine measures and travel restrictions, the seasonal workforce required for harvesting and processing the fruits was also limited, causing supply chain disruptions.
