Slate Price in America Picks Up 9% to $650 per Ton
U.S. Slate Import Price per Ton August 2022
In August 2022, the slate price per ton stood at $650.0 (CIF US), rising by 8.7% against the previous month. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 an increase of 35% m-o-m. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $684.3 per ton. From April 2022 to August 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2022, the country with the highest price was India ($933.0 per ton), while the price for China ($421.0 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+3.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Slate Imports
In August 2022, after two months of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of slate, when their volume increased by 70% to 251 tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a pronounced slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in May 2022 when imports increased by 170% m-o-m. As a result, imports attained the peak of 620 tons. From June 2022 to August 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, slate imports surged to $163K (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 when imports increased by 186% month-to-month. As a result, imports reached the peak of $333K. From June 2022 to August 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
U.S. Slate Imports by Country
China (104 tons), India (79 tons) and Brazil (68 tons) were the main suppliers of slate imports to the United States.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by China (with a CAGR of -3.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced a decline.
In value terms, India ($74K), Brazil ($46K) and China ($44K) were the largest slate suppliers to the United States.
Brazil, with a CAGR of -0.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.
