In May 2022, the rice price per ton amounted to $856 per ton (CIF, US), dropping by -7.5% against the previous month. Over the period from Jan 2022 to May 2022, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.3%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in Apr 2022 an increase of 28% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $965 per ton in Feb 2022; however, from Mar 2022 to May 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In May 2022, the country with the highest price was Pakistan ($1,505 per ton), while the price for India ($796 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From Jan 2022 to May 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Pakistan (+2.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

U.S. Rice Imports
In May 2022, approx. 141K tons of rice were imported into the United States; jumping by 31% against the previous month. Overall, total imports indicated a prominent increase from Jan 2022 to May 2022: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +6.0% over the last four - month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on May 2022 figures, imports decreased by -16.8% against Mar 2022 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in Mar 2022 when imports increased by 110% month-to-month. As a result, imports attained the peak of 169K tons. From Apr 2022 to May 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, rice imports skyrocketed to $120M (IndexBox estimates) in May 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a strong increase from Jan 2022 to May 2022: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +6.0% over the last four months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on May 2022 figures, imports decreased by -1.5% against Mar 2022 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in Mar 2022 when imports increased by 58% m-o-m. As a result, imports attained the peak of $122M. From Apr 2022 to May 2022, the growth imports failed to regain momentum.
U.S. Rice Imports by Country
Thailand (82K tons), India (46K tons) and Vietnam (2.7K tons) were the main suppliers of rice imports to the United States, with a combined 93% share of total imports.
From Jan 2022 to May 2022, the biggest increases were in India (with a CAGR of +28.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest rice suppliers to the United States were Thailand ($68M), India ($37M) and Pakistan ($3.7M), with a combined 90% share of total imports. Vietnam lagged somewhat behind, comprising a further 1.9%.
Among the main suppliers, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +18.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
