U.S. Pork Export Price per Ton June 2022

In June 2022, the pork price per ton amounted to $2,920 (FOB, US), picking up by 2.6% against the previous month. Over the last five-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +3.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 an increase of 5.5% against the previous month. The export price peaked in June 2022.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In June 2022, the country with the highest price was Canada ($4,328 per ton), while the average price for exports to Mexico ($2,277 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to June 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mexico (+9.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

U.S. Pork Export Prices by Type

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major types of exported product. In June 2022, the product with the highest price was frozen carcases of pig meat ($5,884 per ton), while the average price for exports of fresh or chilled carcases of pig meat ($2,241 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to June 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: fresh pork cut (+9.6%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

U.S. Pork Exports

Pork exports from the United States reduced to 159K tons in June 2022, which is down by -3.9% on May 2022 figures. In general, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 with an increase of 9.7% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at 166K tons in May 2022, and then declined in the following month.

In value terms, pork exports shrank modestly to $465M (IndexBox estimates) in June 2022. The total export value increased at an average monthly rate of +2.8% from January 2022 to June 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain months. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when exports increased by 10% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $472M in May 2022, and then dropped in the following month.

U.S. Pork Exports by Type

Frozen pig meat other than cuts or carcases (73K tons), fresh or chilled hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat (48K tons) and fresh or chilled pig meat other than cuts or carcases (32K tons) were the main products of pork exports from the United States, with a combined 95% share of total exports. Frozen hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat, frozen carcases of pig meat and fresh or chilled carcases of pig meat lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 4.6%.

From January 2022 to June 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the major product types, was attained by frozen pork cut (with a CAGR of +13.2%), while the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, frozen pig meat other than cuts or carcases ($218M), fresh or chilled pig meat other than cuts or carcases ($118M) and fresh or chilled hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat ($110M) appeared to be the most exported types of pork from the United States worldwide, with a combined 96% share of total exports. Frozen hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat, frozen carcases of pig meat and fresh or chilled carcases of pig meat lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 4.2%.

In terms of the main product categories, frozen pork cut, with a CAGR of +13.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

U.S. Pork Exports by Country

Mexico (64K tons) was the main destination for pork exports from the United States, with a 40% share of total exports. Moreover, pork exports to Mexico exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Japan (24K tons), threefold. China (16K tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 10% share.

From January 2022 to June 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume to Mexico amounted to -3.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Japan (+1.1% per month) and China (+3.9% per month).

In value terms, Mexico ($145M), Japan ($100M) and South Korea ($54M) appeared to be the largest markets for pork exported from the United States worldwide, with a combined 64% share of total exports. China, Canada, Colombia, the Dominican Republic and Australia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.

Among the main countries of destination, Australia, with a CAGR of +16.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
