The plantain price per ton stood at $512 (CIF, US) per ton in Apr 2022, shrinking by -1.6% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in Mar 2022 when the average import price increased by 2.8% month-to-month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $520 per ton, and then declined slightly in the following month.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In Apr 2022, the highest price was recorded for prices from Mexico ($624 per ton) and Colombia ($588 per ton), while the price for Ecuador ($471 per ton) and Guatemala ($508 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From Jan 2022 to Apr 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Guatemala (+1.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
U.S. Plantain Imports
After three months of growth, overseas purchases of plantains decreased by -4.8% to 33K tons in Apr 2022. The total import volume increased at an average monthly rate of +3.5% over the period from Jan 2022 to Apr 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in Mar 2022 when imports increased by 15% m-o-m. As a result, imports attained the peak of 34K tons, and then contracted modestly in the following month.
In value terms, plantain imports shrank to $17M (IndexBox estimates) in Apr 2022. The total import value increased at an average monthly rate of +3.2% over the period from Jan 2022 to Apr 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain months. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in Mar 2022 with an increase of 18% month-to-month. As a result, imports attained the peak of $18M, and then dropped in the following month.
U.S. Plantain Imports by Country
Guatemala (15K tons), Ecuador (12K tons) and Colombia (4.4K tons) were the main suppliers of plantain imports to the United States, together comprising 97% of total imports.
From Jan 2022 to Apr 2022, the biggest increases were in Colombia (with a CAGR of +8.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Guatemala ($7.7M), Ecuador ($5.6M) and Colombia ($2.6M) constituted the largest plantain suppliers to the United States, with a combined 95% share of total imports.
Among the main suppliers, Colombia, with a CAGR of +9.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
