Oxygen Market in the EU - Key Insights

The revenue of the oxygen market in the European Union amounted to $1.8B in 2017, growing by 9.6% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Over the period under review, oxygen consumption continues to indicate a noticeable setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008, when the market value increased by 12% against the previous year. In that year, the oxygen market attained its peak level of $2.8B. From 2009 to 2017, the growth of the oxygen market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Production in the EU


In 2017, approx. 12B cubic meters of oxygen were produced in the European Union; going down by -4.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, oxygen production continues to indicate a measured slump.

Exports in the EU


The exports stood at 832M cubic meters in 2017, declining by -6% against the previous year. In general, oxygen exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern.

In value terms, oxygen exports totaled $131M (IndexBox estimates) in 2017. Over the period under review, oxygen exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. In that year, oxygen exports attained their peak of $159M. From 2009 to 2017, the growth of oxygen exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country


Belgium (230M cubic meters) and France (175M cubic meters) represented roughly 49% of total exports of oxygen in 2017. Germany (48M cubic meters) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 5.8% share, followed by Croatia (5.7%), the Czech Republic (5.7%), Poland (5%), the Netherlands (5%) and Austria (4.8%). Portugal (30M cubic meters) occupied a minor share of total exports.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of exports, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Poland, while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Belgium ($34M), France ($26M) and the Netherlands ($10M) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2017, together accounting for 54% of total exports. Germany, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Austria, Poland and Croatia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 27%.

Export Prices by Country


In 2017, the oxygen export price in the European Union amounted to $157 per thousand cubic meters, increasing by 14% against the previous year. Over the last decade, the oxygen export price, however, continues to indicate a mild decline.

Export prices varied noticeably by the country of origin; the country with the highest export price was Portugal ($254 per thousand cubic meters), while Croatia ($64 per thousand cubic meters) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of export prices was attained by the Netherlands, while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the EU


In 2017, approx. 723M cubic meters of oxygen were imported in the European Union; increasing by 22% against the previous year. Over the last decade, oxygen imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern.

In value terms, oxygen imports amounted to $122M (IndexBox estimates) in 2017.

Imports by Country


In 2017, Germany (188M cubic meters), distantly followed by France (114M cubic meters), Luxembourg (85M cubic meters), Slovenia (61M cubic meters), Belgium (55M cubic meters), the Czech Republic (44M cubic meters) and Slovakia (42M cubic meters) were the main importers of oxygen, together creating 81% of total imports.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of imports, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by the Czech Republic, while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($24M), France ($17M) and Luxembourg ($9.6M) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2017, together accounting for 42% of total imports. These countries were followed by Belgium, Slovenia, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, which together accounted for a further 20%.

Import Prices by Country


In 2017, the oxygen import price in the European Union amounted to $169 per thousand cubic meters, going down by -10.1% against the previous year. In general, the oxygen import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern.

Average import prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2017, major importing countries recorded the following import prices: in Belgium ($147 per thousand cubic meters) and France ($147 per thousand cubic meters), while Slovenia ($103 per thousand cubic meters) and Slovakia ($111 per thousand cubic meters) were amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of import prices was attained by Slovenia, while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
