U.S. Maize Import Price per Ton June 2022
In June 2022, the maize price per ton stood at $754 (CIF, US), dropping by -13.8% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in April 2022 when the average import price increased by 7% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $908 per ton in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to June 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In June 2022, the country with the highest price was Honduras ($1,094 per ton), while the price for Mexico ($682 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to June 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Honduras (+6.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
U.S. Maize Imports
In June 2022, supplies from abroad of maize (green) increased by 11% to 30K tons for the first time since March 2022, thus ending a two-month declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a abrupt contraction. Imports peaked at 50K tons in March 2022; however, from April 2022 to June 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, maize imports contracted slightly to $23M (IndexBox estimates) in June 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt descent. The smallest decline of -1.2% was in March 2022. Imports peaked at $42M in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to June 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
U.S. Maize Imports by Country
In June 2022, Mexico (26K tons) constituted the largest supplier of maize to the United States, with a 86% share of total imports. Moreover, maize imports from Mexico exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Costa Rica (2.1K tons), more than tenfold.
From January 2022 to June 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from Mexico amounted to -9.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Costa Rica (+5.2% per month) and Honduras (-9.1% per month).
In value terms, Mexico ($18M) constituted the largest supplier of maize to the United States, comprising 78% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Costa Rica ($1.4M), with a 6.2% share of total imports.
From January 2022 to June 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from Mexico totaled -14.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Costa Rica (+7.2% per month) and Honduras (-3.4% per month).
