Liberia’s Wood Charcoal Consumption Increased Steadily

The peculiarity of the Liberian wood charcoal market lies in the fact that domestic production represents more than 99% of the market. About 95-99% of the population of Liberia uses charcoal as the main type of energy fuel, primarily for cooking. Therefore, the use of wood charcoal by the low-income population as a readily available (due to the abundance of forests) and the only available fuel stimulates its domestic production.

In 2016, per capita wood charcoal consumption in Liberia was estimated at 64.3 kg/person, with an annual increase of +1.0% from 2007 to 2016. In value terms, per capita wood charcoal consumption in Liberia amounted to 25.5 USD/year, with a CAGR of +8.9% (IndexBox estimates).

According to projections for the period through 2025, the average annual rate of growth will achieve +2.4%, which will lead the market volume to 360 thousand tonnes by 2025.

The Production of Wood Charcoal Indicated Robust Growth throughout the Analyzed Period

In 2016, Liberian production of wood charcoal stood at 290 thousand tonnes. Liberia’s wood charcoal manufacturing illustrated a positive dynamic in terms of production over the period under review, increasing with a CAGR of +3.8% from 2007 to 2016. 

Denmark Was the only Consumer of Liberia’s Wood Charcoal Exports

Exports of wooden charcoal from Liberia were extremely irregular and negligible both in terms of volume and value, except for only 2008 and 2015. Therefore, Denmark (391 tonnes) was the only consumer of wooden charcoal from Liberia in 2015. No data on exports was recorded in 2016.

China Emerged as the Leading Supplier of Wood Charcoal

In 2016, wooden charcoal imports to Liberia was 23 tonnes in physical terms, and 127 thousand USD in value terms. 

China (23 tonnes) was the main supplier of wooden charcoal to Liberia, with a 99% share of total imports in 2016. Imports from other countries were negligible and irregular throughout the period under review.
