Price of Wine in Italy Increases to $4.0 per Litre
Italy Wine Export Price in December 2022
In December 2022, the wine price amounted to $4.0 per litre (FOB, Italy), picking up by 2.7% against the previous month. Overall, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in September 2022 when the average export price increased by 7.4% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $4.2 per litre in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to December 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In December 2022, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($6.9 per litre), while the average price for exports to Germany ($2.6 per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From December 2021 to December 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Austria (+2.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Italy Wine Export Prices by Type
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major types of exported product. In December 2022, the product with the highest price was sparkling wine ($4.9 per litre), while the average price for exports of grape must ($3.1 per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From December 2021 to December 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: sparkling wine (+1.3%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
Italy Wine Exports
In December 2022, the amount of wine and grape must exported from Italy shrank sharply to 170M litres, with a decrease of -22% against the previous month's figure. In general, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 with an increase of 20% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at 218M litres in November 2022, and then shrank rapidly in the following month.
In value terms, wine exports contracted remarkably to $679M (IndexBox estimates) in December 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when exports increased by 29% month-to-month. The exports peaked at 851M litres in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to December 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Italy Wine Exports by Type
Wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) (130M litres) was the largest type of wine exported from Italy, accounting for a 76% share of total exports. Moreover, wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) exceeded the volume of the second product type, sparkling wine (39M litres), threefold.
From December 2021 to December 2022, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of export of wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) was relatively modest. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: sparkling wine (-1.2% per month) and grape must (-3.9% per month).
In value terms, wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) ($484M) remains the largest type of wine exported from Italy, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by sparkling wine ($193M), with a 28% share of total exports.
From December 2021 to December 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the export volume of wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) was relatively modest. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: sparkling wine (+0.1% per month) and grape must (-3.7% per month).
Italy Wine Exports by Country
Germany (43M litres), the United States (27M litres) and the UK (18M litres) were the main destinations of wine exports from Italy, with a combined 51% share of total exports. Russia, France, Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Canada, Austria, Poland, Japan and Sweden lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 29%.
From December 2021 to December 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Russia (with a CAGR of +3.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United States ($148M), Germany ($111M) and the UK ($65M) constituted the largest markets for wine exported from Italy worldwide, together accounting for 48% of total exports. Switzerland, Canada, the Netherlands, Russia, Belgium, France, Japan, Austria, Poland and Sweden lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.
Russia, with a CAGR of +3.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
