Italy's Bacon and Ham Price Grows to $12.3 per kg

Italy Bacon And Ham Export Price in February 2023

In February 2023, the bacon and ham price stood at $12,343 per ton (FOB, Italy), growing by 7.6% against the previous month. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The export price peaked at $13,127 per ton in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to February 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($20,258 per ton), while the average price for exports to Luxembourg ($1,244 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Switzerland (+0.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was pig meat other than hams or bellies (salted, in brine, dried or smoked) ($14,083 per ton), while the average price for exports of hams, shoulders and cuts of swine (salted, in brine, dried or smoked) ($3,440 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Italy Bacon And Ham Exports

In February 2023, the amount of bacon, ham and other dried, salted or smoked pig meat exported from Italy reduced to 6.3K tons, with a decrease of -7.1% compared with the previous month. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2022 with an increase of 20% against the previous month.

In value terms, bacon and ham exports contracted modestly to $78M (IndexBox estimates) in February 2023. Overall, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 when exports increased by 20% against the previous month.

Pig meat other than hams or bellies (salted, in brine, dried or smoked) (4.9K tons) was the largest type of bacon and ham exported from Italy, with a 77% share of total exports. Moreover, pig meat other than hams or bellies (salted, in brine, dried or smoked) exceeded the volume of the second product type, hams, shoulders and cuts of swine (salted, in brine, dried or smoked) (780 tons), sixfold.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of export of pig meat other than hams or bellies (salted, in brine, dried or smoked) was relatively modest. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: hams, shoulders and cuts of swine (salted, in brine, dried or smoked) (+7.7% per month) and swine bellies (salted, in brine, dried or smoked) (+0.5% per month).

In value terms, pig meat other than hams or bellies (salted, in brine, dried or smoked) ($69M) remains the largest type of bacon and ham exported from Italy, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by swine bellies (salted, in brine, dried or smoked) ($6.4M), with an 8.2% share of total exports.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the export volume of pig meat other than hams or bellies (salted, in brine, dried or smoked) was relatively modest. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: swine bellies (salted, in brine, dried or smoked) (-0.3% per month) and hams, shoulders and cuts of swine (salted, in brine, dried or smoked) (-2.3% per month).

Italy Bacon And Ham Exports by Country

France (1.5K tons), the United States (929 tons) and Germany (808 tons) were the main destinations of bacon and ham exports from Italy, with a combined 51% share of total exports. These countries were followed by the UK, Luxembourg, Belgium, Austria, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Australia, Switzerland and Poland, which together accounted for a further 34%.

From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Luxembourg (with a CAGR of +23.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for bacon and ham exported from Italy were France ($18M), the United States ($14M) and Germany ($11M), together accounting for 54% of total exports. These countries were followed by the UK, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Sweden, Australia, Poland, Spain and Luxembourg, which together accounted for a further 32%.

Australia, with a CAGR of +4.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
