In May 2022, the iodine price per ton amounted to $37,857 (CIF, US), with a decrease of -2.5% against the previous month. Over the period from Jan 2022 to May 2022, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.5%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in Mar 2022 an increase of 9.4% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $38,820 per ton in Apr 2022; however, from May 2022 to May 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In May 2022, the country with the highest price was Chile ($37,934 per ton), while the price for Japan stood at $37,387 per ton. From Jan 2022 to May 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Japan (+7.8%).

U.S. Imports into the U.S.
Iodine imports into the United States fell notably to 420 tons in May 2022, declining by -34.9% compared with Apr 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in Apr 2022 with an increase of 430% against the previous month. As a result, imports reached the peak of 645 tons, and then plummeted in the following month.
In value terms, iodine imports declined markedly to $16M (IndexBox estimates) in May 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in Apr 2022 with an increase of 456% m-o-m. As a result, imports reached the peak of $25M, and then contracted sharply in the following month.
U.S. Imports by Country
In May 2022, Chile (368 tons) constituted the largest supplier of iodine to the United States, with a 88% share of total imports. Moreover, iodine imports from Chile exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Japan (51 tons), sevenfold. From Jan 2022 to May 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume from Chile amounted to +4.6%.
In value terms, Chile ($14M) constituted the largest supplier of iodine to the United States, comprising 88% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Japan ($1.9M), with a 12% share of total imports. From Jan 2022 to May 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value from Chile stood at +6.7%.
