India's Hot-Rolled Steel Bar and Rod Price Drops 5% to Average $1,941/Ton

India Hot-Rolled Steel Bar and Rod Export Price in November 2022

In November 2022, the hot-rolled steel bar and rod price stood at $1,941 per ton (FOB, India), declining by -5.5% against the previous month. Overall, the export price, however, saw a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in July 2022 when the average export price increased by 43% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $2,129 per ton in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to November 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In November 2022, the country with the highest price was Germany ($3,696 per ton), while the average price for exports to Bhutan ($655 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From November 2021 to November 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+5.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

India Hot-Rolled Steel Bar and Rod Export Prices by Type

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major types of exported product. In November 2022, the product with the highest price was hot-rolled round bars of stainless steel ($4,015 per ton), while the average price for exports of steel, alloy; bars and rods, hot-rolled, in irregularly wound coils ($723 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From November 2021 to November 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: iron or non-alloy steel; bars and rods, hot-rolled, in irregularly wound coils (+2.1%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

India Hot-Rolled Steel Bar and Rod Exports

In November 2022, shipments abroad of hot-rolled steel bars and rods was finally on the rise to reach 30K tons after five months of decline. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2021 with an increase of 77% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at 262K tons in February 2022; however, from March 2022 to November 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hot-rolled steel bar and rod exports soared to $57M (IndexBox estimates) in November 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a abrupt descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in December 2021 when exports increased by 68% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at 224K tons in February 2022; however, from March 2022 to November 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

India Hot-Rolled Steel Bar and Rod Exports by Type

Hot-rolled bars in bearing steels (8.9K tons), iron or non-alloy steel; bars and rods, not further worked than forged, hot-rolled, hot drawn or hot-extruded, but including those twisted after rolling (8.3K tons) and hot-rolled wire rod in coil of stainless steel (5.6K tons) were the main products of hot-rolled steel bar and rod exports from India, with a combined 77% share of total exports. Hot-rolled round bars of stainless steel, steel, stainless, iron or non-alloy steel; bars and rods, hot-rolled, in irregularly wound coils and steel, alloy; bars and rods, hot-rolled, in irregularly wound coils lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.

From November 2021 to November 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the major product types, was attained by hot-rolled bearing steel bar (with a CAGR of +3.8%), while the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the most traded types of hot-rolled steel bars and rods in India were hot-rolled wire rod in coil of stainless steel ($17M), hot-rolled round bars of stainless steel ($14M) and steel, stainless ($10M), with a combined 72% share of total exports. These products were followed by hot-rolled bars in bearing steels, iron or non-alloy steel; bars and rods, not further worked than forged, hot-rolled, hot drawn or hot-extruded, but including those twisted after rolling, iron or non-alloy steel; bars and rods, hot-rolled, in irregularly wound coils and steel, alloy; bars and rods, hot-rolled, in irregularly wound coils, which together accounted for a further 28%.

Hot-rolled bearing steel bar, with a CAGR of +3.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main product categories over the period under review, while shipments for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

India Hot-Rolled Steel Bar and Rod Exports by Country

Italy (6.2K tons), Maldives (5.7K tons) and the United Arab Emirates (2.3K tons) were the main destinations of hot-rolled steel bar and rod exports from India, together accounting for 48% of total exports.

From November 2021 to November 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Maldives (with a CAGR of +23.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Italy ($10M), Germany ($6.4M) and Belgium ($5.9M) constituted the largest markets for hot-rolled steel bar and rod exported from India worldwide, together accounting for 39% of total exports. Maldives, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, the Netherlands, Brazil, Mexico, Indonesia, Bhutan, Egypt and Bangladesh lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 41%.

Maldives, with a CAGR of +24.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
