The revenue of the grapefruit market in Middle East amounted to $277M in 2017, surging by 21% against the previous year. Production in the Middle East


The grapefruit production stood at 560K tonnes in 2017, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. The volume of grapefruit production peaked at 611K tonnes in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2017, production failed to regain its momentum. Exports in the Middle East


In 2017, approx. 213K tonnes of grapefruits were exported in Middle East; coming down by -19.1% against the previous year. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2007 to 2017; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years.

In value terms, grapefruit exports stood at $144M (IndexBox estimates) in 2017. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2007 to 2017; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, grapefruit exports reached their peak figure at $180M in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2017, exports failed to regain their momentum.

Exports by Country


In 2017, Turkey (130K tonnes) represented the key exporter for grapefruits, making up 61% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Israel (79K tonnes), creating 37% share of total exports.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of exports, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Israel (+5.5% per year).

In value terms, Israel ($74M) and Turkey ($68M) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2017, with a combined 99% share of total exports.

Export Prices by Country


In 2017, the grapefruit export price in Middle East amounted to $676 per tonne, jumping by 20% against the previous year. The the grapefruit export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017, an increase of 20% year-to-year. The level of export price peaked at $717 per tonne in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2017, export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Export prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest export price was Israel ($939 per tonne), while Turkey stood at $522 per tonne.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of export prices was attained by Turkey (-0.9% per year).

Grapefruit Imports


Imports in the Middle East


In 2017, grapefruit imports in Middle East stood at 29K tonnes, reducing by -52% against the previous year. The grapefruit imports continue to indicate a slight increase.

In value terms, grapefruit imports amounted to $19M (IndexBox estimates) in 2017. The grapefruit imports continue to indicate a remarkable growth. Over the period under review, grapefruit imports reached their maximum at $34M in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2017, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country


The United Arab Emirates was the major importing countries with an import of around 11K tonnes, which resulted at 37% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Saudi Arabia (6.1K tonnes), Iraq (4.8K tonnes), Kuwait (2.4K tonnes) and Palestine (2K tonnes), together generating 53% share of total imports. Turkey (899 tonnes), Qatar (536 tonnes) and Oman (502 tonnes) held the weak share of total imports.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of imports, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Oman (+17.1% per year), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest grapefruit markets worldwide were the United Arab Emirates ($7.3M), Saudi Arabia ($4M) and Iraq ($2M), together comprising 71% of total imports. Palestine, Kuwait, Turkey, Qatar and Oman lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.

Import Prices by Country


In 2017, the grapefruit import price in Middle East amounted to $648 per tonne, increasing by 34% against the previous year. The import price indicated a moderate expansion from 2007 to 2017: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period.

Import prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest import price was Palestine ($1 per kg), while Iraq ($418 per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable rate of growth in terms of import prices was attained by Saudi Arabia (+6.5% per year), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
