Global T-Shirt Market: Uzbekistan Ramps Up Exports During Pandemic

Global T-shirt Exports

Global t-shirt exports dropped rapidly to 4.9B units in 2020, waning by -49.2% against 2019 figures. In value terms, supplies fell to $34.7B (IndexBox estimates).

The shipments of the three major suppliers of t-shirts, namely China, India and Turkey, represented more than half of the total volume. Vietnam (333M units) took a 6.8% share (based on tonnes) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the U.S. (6.5%). Mexico (143M units), Uzbekistan (139M units), Cambodia (138M units), Pakistan (129M units), El Salvador (108M units), Sri Lanka (101M units), Nicaragua (100M units) and the UK (91M units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

In value terms, China ($6.3B) remains the largest t-shirt supplier worldwide, comprising 18% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Vietnam ($2.3B), with a 6.7% share of global exports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 6.6% share.

In 2020, Uzbekistan was the only supplier that managed to ramp up T-shirt exports while other exporters saw a drop in sales. Exports from Uzbekistan rose by 8.5% y/y to 139M units and or by 48% y/y to $165M in monetary terms.

The average t-shirt export price stood at $7.1 per unit in 2020, increasing by 79% against the previous year. Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin; the country with the highest price was the UK ($8.4 per unit), while Uzbekistan ($1.2 per unit) was amongst the lowest. In 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China. T-shirts from China rose in price twofold.
